Walk along the Nightingale Corridor and View the Ninomaru Palace, Stage of the Return of Power to the Emperor

About this spot

A UNESCO World Heritage Site built by Tokugawa Ieyasu, where the 15th Shogun, Tokugawa Yoshinobu, declared his intention to return power to the Emperor. In the National Treasure Ninomaru Palace, you'll walk along the famous nightingale corridor that chirps with each step—a deliberate architectural feature—before reaching the Grand Hall adorned with landscape paintings by the Kano School. Standing at the very site of this pivotal moment in history from your textbooks is sure to thrill history-loving friends. There are many highlights, including the brilliantly carved Chinese gate with vibrant colors, the Ninomaru Garden surrounding a pond, and views of the Honmaru from the site of the former keep. When explored leisurely, the spacious castle grounds require about 1.5 hours. Seasonal flowers and lush garden greenery are beautiful, making this a fitting start to a historical walk through central Kyoto.

Tips

Just outside the exit of Nijojo-mae Station on the Tozai Subway Line. During peak tourist season, ticket lines can form early in the morning, so advance online purchase is recommended for smooth entry. Remove your shoes to view the Ninomaru Palace, and photography is prohibited inside the palace buildings. Take photos at the Chinese gate and gardens instead. The grounds are extensive, so comfortable walking shoes are advised.

Best time to visit

Approximately 1.5 hours required. Early morning, soon after opening, is less crowded, and you'll hear the nightingale corridor sounds more clearly.
