A shrine dedicated to Abe no Seimei, an onmyoji (Taoist diviner) from the Heian period, with a distinctive atmosphere created by the pentagram crest (Seimei Kikyo) displayed on torii gates and lanterns throughout the shrine. Within the compact grounds are the Seimei Well, said to have sprung forth through Seimei's spiritual power, the protective peach for warding off misfortune, and charming stone statues of shikigami (spiritual servants), all squeezed together. As a place repeatedly featured in novels, manga, and films inspired by Seimei's legend, it's a delightful spot to explore with story-loving friends, exchanging remarks like 'This is the famous Seimei shrine!' The grounds are modest in size, making it a perfect detour on the historical walk from Nijo Castle toward the Imperial Palace. Take a moment to pray for a safe day ahead.
Tips
About 15–20 minutes' walk north from Nijo Castle along Horikawa Street, or take the city bus to 'Ichijo Modoriashi/Seimei Shrine Mae' stop for immediate access. It's best to bring cash for purchasing talismans and collecting shrine seals. Although the grounds are compact, long lines may form during Setsubun Festival or holidays. The nearby Ichijo Modoriashi Bridge (一条戻橋) also holds significance in Seimei legends and is worth visiting.
Best time to visit
Approximately 30 minutes required. Morning visits allow for peaceful contemplation of the grounds.
