Cross the Expansive Park on a Leisurely Walk, Soothed by the Imperial Palace Walls and Forest Greenery

About this spot

A vast national park spanning approximately 65 hectares that surrounds the Kyoto Imperial Palace. Straight paths lined with white gravel, earthen walls stretching endlessly, and lush trees create an open, unexpected sanctuary in the city center. The grounds are freely accessible to all, and besides the Kyoto Imperial Palace where successive emperors once lived, historical remnants such as former noble residences and the Kaneiji Palace Residence are scattered throughout. With many benches and grassy areas, a leisurely walk across the park with rests in the shade will give you a tangible sense of the scale of Kyoto as the city of the Imperial Palace. This is perfect for reflecting on Nijo Castle and Seimei Shrine visited earlier that morning, and instead of making your afternoon journey to the Manga Museum a mere transit, this verdant shortcut transforms it into a meaningful part of your experience.

Tips

Easily accessible from Maruyama or Imadegawa stations on the subway; entry and exit throughout the grounds are free. The paths are lined with gravel, so sturdy walking shoes are essential. Summer sun offers little shade in some sections, so bring a hat and water. If time permits, the Kyoto Imperial Palace, open year-round (closed Mondays, with baggage inspection, free admission), is worth visiting.

Best time to visit

Approximately 1 hour required. A leisurely afternoon walk through dappled sunlight is ideal.
