Japan's first full-fledged manga museum, co-operated by Kyoto City and Kyoto Seika University. The building was originally Ryoji Elementary School, built in the early Showa period, and retains a nostalgic school atmosphere with wooden corridors and staircases. The signature feature is the 'Manga Wall,' comprising bookshelves stretching approximately 200 meters with about 50,000 volumes neatly lined up. You can freely pick titles ranging from classics to recent works and read them anywhere in the museum. On sunny days, lounging on the grass plaza to read is a beloved pastime. With live paper-theater performances and exhibitions on manga culture, it's the perfect conclusion to your historical walk—a place where you and friends can spend hours exchanging favorite titles and losing track of time.
Tips
Superb access, just a 2-minute walk from Kawaramachi-Oike Station on the subway. Check the official website calendar in advance, as the museum has closure days. Same-day re-entry is allowed with your ticket. A café is also on the premises. Because there are so many manga to choose from, it's wise to allocate extra time.
Best time to visit
Approximately 2 hours required. Late afternoon, when you can read undisturbed until closing, is ideal.
