Pick Up the Signature Mame Mochi and Enjoy It at Kamogawa Delta
About this spot
Founded in 1899 (Meiji 32), this venerable confectionery is universally acknowledged as THE place for mame mochi in Kyoto. The signature mame mochi masterpiece unites the subtle saltiness of red pea beans, the chewy texture of mochi, and smooth red bean paste in perfect harmony—a creation that draws daily lines of customers at the shop entrance. Watching the artisans skillfully roll out mochi after mochi while you wait is half the fun. The seasonal fresh confections and ohagi (stuffed rice balls) are also highly regarded. Take your mame mochi to Kamogawa Delta, just steps away. Perch on the stepping stones at the triangular sandbar where the Kamogawa and Takano rivers merge, catch the river breeze, and savor your treat—a sweetness that perfectly caps off a full day of romantic strolling.
Tips
Approximately 5 minutes on foot from Demachi Yanagi Station on the Keihan Line, near the intersection of Kawaramachi-Imadegawa. Payment is cash only, so come prepared. The line may look long, but it moves quickly, so wait times are often shorter than expected. Closed Tuesdays and the fourth Wednesday of each month. Mame mochi has a same-day expiration, so buy only what you'll eat. It's about a 3-minute walk to Kamogawa Delta.
Best time to visit
Approximately 30 minutes. Mame mochi often sells out in late afternoon, so visiting by 3 p.m. is safe.
