Pass Through Tadasu Forest's Approach and Pray for a Blessed Bond at the World Heritage Aioisha Shrine
About this spot
Officially named Kamomioya Shrine (賀茂御祖神社), this sanctuary ranks among Kyoto's oldest alongside Kamigamo Shrine and is registered as a World Heritage Site under "Historic Monuments of Ancient Kyoto." The approach that runs through Tadasu Forest spans approximately 120,000 square meters of primordial woodland—a separate world where you are enveloped in ancient forest air despite being in the heart of the city. Simply walking hand in hand through the dappled sunlight clears the mind. The Aioisha Shrine (相生社) before the romon gate is renowned as a deity of matchmaking, and the sacred tree "Renri no Sakaiki" (連理の賢木), where two trees have become one midway up their trunks, symbolizes a blessed bond. The unique prayer ritual of walking around the shrine while holding an ema (prayer tablet) is also popular with couples. The grounds offer endless points of interest, including the Kawai Shrine (河合神社) known for its beauty-blessing votive tablets featuring mirrors, and Mitarashi Pond (御手洗池), said to be the birthplace of mitarashi dango (dumplings).
Tips
Approximately 12 minutes on foot from Demachi Yanagi Station on the Keihan Line, or directly from the "Shimogamo Shrine" bus stop. From the Ceramic Tile Masterpieces Garden, you can also take a pleasant 30-minute walk along the Kamogawa River. The main approach through Tadasu Forest leads from the southern first torii gate to the main hall, so entering from the south is recommended to fully enjoy the forest walk. Aioisha is before the romon gate; Kawai Shrine is at the southern end of the forest.
Best time to visit
Approximately 1 hour 15 minutes. Afternoon light filtering through Tadasu Forest's canopy is beautiful, and the approach walk is most pleasant.
