About this spot

A waterside park spanning Kobe Harbor's waterfront, with open vistas framed by the red Port Tower and the sail-shaped Maritime Museum. The white monument erected to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the port's opening is Kobe's signature photo spot, and during morning hours with fewer crowds, you can take leisurely family photos. The park also features the Kobe Port Earthquake Memorial Park, which preserves the original quay damaged in the Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake, quietly telling the port town's history. The expansive lawn and seafront promenade feature flat, level terrain where small children can walk freely, and watching the passing ships is delightful—the perfect starting point for a harbor walk.

Tips

About 10 minutes on foot south of JR/Hanshin Motomachi Station (元町駅); about 5 minutes on foot from Subway Kaigan Line Minato Motomachi Station (みなと元町駅). The Meriken Park parking lot is convenient if driving. While the park interior is flat and easy to navigate with a stroller, the waterside plaza has little shade, so in summer don't forget a hat and water. The area in front of the monument gets crowded after midday, so morning is best for photos.

Best time to visit

Approximately 1 hour. Morning is quieter, allowing time for leisurely family photos at the monument.
