Located north of Himeji Castle, this prefectural history museum was designed by world-renowned architect Tange Kenzo. Inside, large models of Himeji Castle and other castles are displayed, allowing you to examine the main keep's structure up close. Reviewing the grand main keep you just climbed via the model deepens children's understanding considerably. In addition to exhibits tracing Hyogo's history, there are abundant artifacts that catch children's eyes, such as antique toys. Armor and twelve-layered kimono dress-up experiences (first-come, first-served) are hugely popular with history-loving children. Known as a photo spot where the real Himeji Castle is reflected in the glass wall surfaces, this museum allows you to simultaneously enjoy the exhibits, architecture, and the castle outside the windows—perfect for learning time.
Tips
About 5 minutes' walk north of Himeji Castle. Permanent exhibits are reasonably priced at 200 yen for adults, with special exhibitions charged separately. For armor and twelve-layered kimono dress-up experiences, confirm the operating times and first-come, first-served procedures at admission. The building is fully equipped with elevators and is easily accessible by stroller. The air-conditioned interior serves as a valuable rest point to cool off from walking.
