About this spot

An art museum housed in a red-brick building originally built as an Imperial Army storehouse during the Meiji period; the building is registered as a National Tangible Cultural Property. The striking contrast between the heavy red brick and the white Himeji Castle rising behind it is known as one of Himeji's finest views, and the composition viewed across the grassy forecourt with scattered sculptures creates a premier photo spot. The collection centers on modern art from Belgium and beyond, along with works by artists connected to Himeji, with a rich program of special exhibitions. The calm interior allows families to spend quality time together quietly contemplating artworks—a fitting finale to a day of walking. At dusk, the red brick glows in the setting sun, and the contrast with the White Heron Castle deepens further, making this the perfect venue to conclude your course.

Tips

Located east of Himeji Castle, just before the Hyogo Prefectural Museum of History—easily walkable between them. Permanent collection exhibitions are reasonably priced at 210 yen for adults, with special exhibitions charged separately per exhibition. Photos capturing both the red brick and Himeji Castle together are best taken from the grassy forecourt. Both the building's exterior and garden sculptures can be enjoyed free of charge, so enjoy leisurely photo time afterward. Strollers are permitted inside the museum.

Best time to visit

Approximately 1 hour. Evening with the setting sun on the red brick is most beautiful, creating the finest photo opportunity with Himeji Castle
