About this spot

The ropeway connects the far end of the hot-spring town to the summit of Mount Daishi (大師山), with an unusual structure that includes a midway station leading to Onsenji Temple (温泉寺). At the end of about a 7-minute ride through the air awaits the leisurely flow of the Maruyama River (円山川), the steamy hot-spring town, and, on clear days, a sweeping panorama extending all the way to the Sea of Japan. The summit's Miharashi Terrace Cafe (みはらしテラスカフェ) is a unique spot billed as the cafe located in the least crowded place in Japan, and coffee and sweets while gazing at the spectacular view make a perfect highlight for a trip for two. Trying your luck at kawarake-nage, throwing small clay discs for a wish at the summit plaza, is also a classic activity. Take in the hot-spring town spread out below before heading back down, and the scenery of your stroll will look different all over again.

Tips

The boarding station is at the far end of the hot-spring town, about a 15 to 20-minute walk from Kinosaki Onsen Station. Since departures run on a set schedule, checking the times at the station as you go helps keep your wait short. Service may be suspended in bad weather such as strong winds, so check the official website for the day's operating status. A round-trip ticket is recommended for a leisurely visit.

Best time to visit

About 1.5 hours. Late morning, before noon, when the air is clear, is recommended for the clearest views.
