An ancient temple said to have been founded in the 8th year of Tenpyo (738 CE) by the Buddhist priest Dochi-Shonin, who opened Kinosaki Onsen, and has served as the guardian temple of the hot spring town for 1,300 years. The main hall, built in the early Muromachi period, is designated as a National Important Cultural Property as one of the oldest wooden buildings in the Tajima region, and its substantial roof curves beautifully against the green of the surrounding mountains. The principal image, an eleven-faced Kannon statue, is also designated as an Important Cultural Property, and the quiet interior of the hall conveys the long history of the hot spring town with its therapeutic traditions. Despite its convenient location just a short walk from the ropeway's midway station, it feels like a different world away from the bustling hot spring town. Tips

Get off at the 'Onsen Temple Station' (温泉寺駅) midway stop on the ropeway—the temple is just steps away. You can also climb the stone steps of the approach from the base (approximately 20–30 minutes on foot). There is a fee for viewing the main hall; check at the reception desk. The stone steps are numerous, so wear comfortable walking shoes. You can receive a temple stamp (御朱印) here, which makes a wonderful memento of your couple's trip.
