About this spot

The symbolic bathhouse of Kinosaki's public bath tour, whose name comes from the Edo-period physician Kagawa Shutoku's (香川修徳) praise of it as 'Japan's finest spring'. Its imposing facade, with a karahafu gable reminiscent of a kabuki theater, is a landmark of the hot-spring town, picturesque even just to look at. Inside is the famous cave bath, carved out of the rock face, a real draw for slowly soothing a body warmed by all the walking. After bathing, head to the willow-lined Otani River (大谿川) spreading out right in front. Amid the quintessentially Kinosaki scenery woven by stone bridges, willows, and rising steam, it's recommended to enjoy hot-spring sweets and seafood snacks as you stroll, lingering until the town lights up at dusk. Walking side by side in yukata robes makes for an unforgettable climax to close out your trip together.

Tips

About a 10-minute walk from Kinosaki Onsen Station, located in the heart of the hot-spring town, so you won't get lost finding it. Bring your own towel or buy one at the reception desk. Evenings tend to get crowded around inns' dinner times, so around 2 to 4pm is relatively relaxed. Closed on Wednesdays, so check in advance. If you plan to visit multiple public baths, a one-day pass is a good deal.

Best time to visit

About 2 hours. Around 2 to 4pm, before the crowds arrive, is a good time to aim for, letting you enjoy a dusk stroll after bathing too.
