A Zen temple founded as the family temple of the Yamana clan, lords of Izushi Castle. Revived in the early Edo period by the renowned monk Takuan Sōho (Takuan Sōhō), a native of Izushi, it is affectionately known as 'Takuan Temple.' The main attraction is its meticulously maintained garden, featuring a crane and tortoise garden said to be designed by Takuan himself, with quiet spaces that transform with the seasons. The green of moss and fresh maple leaves is beautiful, and as you sit on the veranda watching the garden, the fatigue of a day spent eating and strolling seems to melt away. Given its connection to Takuan, whose name is linked to the origin of pickled radish, this temple is a fitting place to conclude your soba-filled castle town journey, offering profound and contemplative moments.
Tips
About a 10-minute walk east of Tatsu-Koro, in a quiet corner away from the bustle of the castle town. Admission is paid; temple seals are also available. The garden is particularly beautiful with moss glistening after rain, so even overcast days are ideal. If returning by bus, check the departure time beforehand and allow time for the walk to the Izushi bus stop.
Best time to visit
Approximately 1 to 1.5 hours. Late afternoon with soft light is ideal for garden viewing.
