Tour the revolving stage and trap door at Kansai's oldest playhouse and experience Meiji-era atmosphere

A playhouse that opened in 1901—the oldest existing theater building in the Kansai region. Though it once closed, it was revived in 2008 after extensive renovation and continues to host kabuki, rakugo, and other performances today. On non-performance days, the interior is open for viewing, allowing visitors to see up close the wooden seating galleries bathed in warm wood tones, vividly colored retro signboards, and the hand-operated revolving stage. Descending into the trap door beneath the stage reveals the mechanisms supporting the revolving stage, which will bring exclamations even from non-theater enthusiasts. Standing on stage and looking out over the audience lets you experience the Meiji-era actor's perspective. Combined with the charm of the castle town, this is a rich spot that will give you plenty to talk about with your friends.
Tips
About a 5-minute walk east of Tatsu-Koro, located in a corner of the castle town. The interior may not be open during kabuki performances or special events, so check the opening schedule before your visit. Staff may guide you through the hall on tours; the explanations of the revolving stage and trap door are worthwhile. The interior has many steps and steep stairs, so watch your footing.
Best time to visit
Approximately 1 hour. Early afternoon tends to have fewer visitors, allowing leisurely viewing of the revolving stage and trap door.
