A complex facility located on a hilltop at the southern tip of Awaji Island overlooking the Naruto Strait, where the observation plaza offers a sweeping panoramic view of the Onaruto Bridge and the strait. The signature attraction is a giant object shaped like an Awaji Island onion called "Ottama Negi" (Big Onion). It's hugely popular as a photo spot with the Onaruto Bridge in the background and has become the standard family photo location for three generations. Inside the facility, the Whirlpool Science Museum uses models and videos to clearly explain why the world's largest whirlpools form, making it perfect preparation before the afternoon cruise. The complex also offers abundant gourmet food and souvenirs featuring Awaji Island onions, plus a restaurant where you can dine while enjoying views of the sea. From grandparents to children, everyone finds something to enjoy at this wonderfully indulgent spot.

Tips

Located about 3 minutes by car from Awaji Island South IC on the Kobe-Awaji-Naruto Expressway; free parking available. The signature "Ottama Negi" photo spot can have lines on weekend mid-days, so early morning right after opening is your best bet. The observation plaza at the hilltop has little sun shelter, so bring a hat and drinks in summer. It's smoother if you complete admission procedures at the Whirlpool Science Museum reception desk first.
