Experience 500 years of Awaji puppet theater, moved by emotionally rich performances

About this spot

A dedicated theater for Awaji puppet theater located right next to Fukura Port. Awaji puppet theater (Awaji Ningyo Joruri), passed down for approximately 500 years on Awaji Island, is designated as a National Important Intangible Folk Culture Property. The performance—where the narrator's voice, the shamisen's tones, and the large puppet manipulated by three operators become one—is full of emotion. Even if you don't understand all the words, the detailed expressions and movements of the lifelike puppets naturally captivate both children and adults. Before the performance, staff explain the mechanism of the puppets and the story outline in an easy-to-understand way, so families new to traditional performing arts need not worry. Sitting back to appreciate the stage after the excitement of the cruise makes for a fitting, enriching finale to your three-generation trip.

Tips

Located in the same Fukura Port area as the whirlpool cruise boarding point; easily reached on foot after disembarking. Performances run multiple times daily on a rotation basis, so check the official website in advance for showtimes and choose a performance that matches your cruise disembarkation time. Seating makes it perfect for wrapping up a tired afternoon of walking.

Best time to visit

Allow approximately 1 hour or more. An afternoon performance after cruise disembarkation is convenient.
