Savor black bean sweets while gazing at a stone garden at Odagaki Mamedo, a long-established black soybean shop's café

About this spot

A long-established shop founded some 300 years ago, Odagaki Shoten has continuously handled Tamba black soybeans, the pride of Tamba Sasayama. The café "Odagaki Mamedo" adjoins the historic main shop and offers a luxurious space where you can savor sweets while gazing at a stone garden designed by contemporary artist Hiroshi Sugimoto. The menu features dishes crafted with plump, large Tamba black soybeans—parfaits, zenzai (sweet red bean soup), and fragrant black bean tea—each expressing the pure essence of the ingredient. The refined taste, which draws out the beans' natural sweetness, is so expertly crafted it transforms your very image of black soybeans. At the shop counter, you can purchase carefully selected Tamba black soybeans, black bean confections, and simmered beans, so you can take home the exact flavors you enjoyed at the café as souvenirs. Located just minutes from the heart of the castle town, this is the standout destination this course offers.

Tips

About a 5-minute walk from Sasayama Castle's Great Hall, located in the Nikai-machi area at the heart of the castle town. The café "Odagaki Mamedo" is popular and often has waits during weekend lunch hours, so aim for opening time or after 1 p.m. Check the official website beforehand regarding advance reservations for peace of mind. The shop also welcomes shop-only visits; if you're taking fresh confections home, bring a cooler bag to keep them fresh.

Best time to visit

Allow about 1.5 hours. To avoid crowds, arrive right after opening or after 1 p.m., when the lunch rush has subsided.
