At the eastern edge of the castle town, traditional merchant houses line a street for about 600 meters. The narrow-fronted, deep-set "tsumairi" (side-entry) merchant houses stand shoulder-to-shoulder, and this streetscape is designated as a National Important Preservation District for Groups of Historic Buildings. The harmony created by red roofs and bamboo-latticed wooden shutters is truly striking. Buildings from the Edo period through the early Showa era remain in active use, hosting shops featuring pottery, antiques, galleries, and cafés. This street is best enjoyed by stepping beneath the traditional noren (shop curtains) and chatting with shopkeepers as you wander at leisure. The charm lies in its understated, non-commercialized atmosphere; stroll here as a couple, and you'll find yourself reaching for your camera again and again, captivated by the ever-changing character of the alleyways.
Tips
About a 10-minute walk east from the Nikai-machi area; wandering through the streetscape is free. Many shops have irregular hours or close early, so most shut down before 5 p.m. If shopping is your goal, aim for the early afternoon. This is a living residential street with vehicular traffic, so be mindful of your surroundings when taking photographs. For the return trip, buses to Sasayama-guchi Station are available nearby at the "Moto-Sasayama" bus stop.
Best time to visit
Allow about 1.5 hours. The afternoon light around 1 to 3 p.m., when the sun casts diagonal rays, beautifully illuminates the tsumairi rooflines and creates a pleasant atmosphere.
