Morning Scenic Hike: View Takeda Castle Ruins Head-On from the Observation Deck
About this spot
A gorge spreading across the middle slopes of Mount Asago (朝来山), which faces Takeda Castle Ruins across the Madoka River (円山川) and is an ideal viewing spot for seeing the 'Sky Castle' straight ahead. From the Riyuun Gorge Terrace (立雲峡テラス) near the First Observation Deck, you can take in the entire expanse of interconnected stone walls at the mountain summit. From late autumn through early winter mornings, the valley below sometimes sinks into a sea of clouds, with only the stone walls floating mysteriously above the clouds—a magical sight. Spring, when ancient mountain cherry blossoms over 300 years old bloom, is known as 'Tajima Yoshino' (但馬吉野) and is a famous cherry blossom viewing spot. The appeal is that it shows a different face with each season. The grand panorama waiting at the top of the mountain trail, climbed while encouraging each other with friends, will undoubtedly become the highlight of your trip.
Tips
About 10 minutes by car from Wada-yama IC on the Banshin Rental Road (播但連絡道路). It takes about 40 minutes on foot up the mountain trail from the parking lot to the First Observation Deck (Riyuun Gorge Terrace). If time is limited, you can still view Takeda Castle Ruins from the Second and Third Observation Decks closer by. An environmental maintenance cooperation fee of 300 yen (for adults) in cash is required upon entry. There are no vending machines along the route, so bring drinks with you and wear comfortable walking shoes.
Best time to visit
Approximately 1 hour. For the best chance to see the sea of clouds, aim for early morning to around 8 AM from late September through early December.
