Enjoy learning about life in ancient Nara through excavated artifacts, intricate models, and interactive exhibits

About this spot

Opened in 2018 at Suzaku Gate Plaza, this guidance facility for Heijō Palace Site Historical Park offers free admission. The exhibition room displays authentic roof tiles and wooden tablets unearthed during excavations alongside meticulously detailed reconstruction models of the palace complex and a full-scale structural model of the First Daidokuden, allowing visitors to three-dimensionally experience life in ancient Nara. Interactive corners where visitors can practice writing on wooden tablets or solve assembly puzzles engage even weary grandchildren, whose eyes light up anew. Faced with photo-rich displays and video presentations, grandparents naturally become animated tour guides. Concluding your day by learning here creates a magical moment when the grassland you've walked across reveals itself to be a city from thirteen hundred years past—a truly fitting way to bring your journey together.

Tips

Located on the east side of Suzaku Gate Plaza, just 2–3 minutes on foot from the gate itself. Admission is free and reservations are not required. The hall is climate-controlled with restroom and rest facilities, making it ideal as a late-afternoon wrap-up to an active day. The interactive corners can get busy, so consider doing hands-on activities first, then viewing exhibits afterward. Strollers are welcome throughout.

Best time to visit

Allow approximately 1 hour. Visiting in the late afternoon after exploring the palace site deepens your understanding of the exhibits.
