About this spot
Along the path beside rice fields sits a massive granite stone, about 3.6 meters long and 1.8 meters tall, looking just like a laughing turtle. When, who, and why it was carved remain mysteries today—one of Asuka's enigmatic stone monuments. A legend says "when the turtle stone faces west, Nara Basin will sink into a muddy sea," and it currently faces southwest—a great story to spark children's imaginations. Viewing is free and unrestricted. Located along the cycling route from Ishibutai Kofun heading toward Takamatsu, among roads dotted with historic sites like Tachibana-dera Temple and Kawahara-dera Temple ruins, it's a perfect spot to stop and take a memorial photo with the humorous stone face.
Tips
About 10 minutes by bicycle from Ishibutai Kofun, along the route heading toward Takamatsu passing near Tachibana-dera Temple. There is no dedicated parking lot, so visiting by bicycle or on foot is convenient. The viewing itself takes just minutes, but local farm stands and unmanned sales often operate nearby—buying local fruit as a snack is part of the fun. The surrounding area is a living road, so be mindful not to obstruct traffic when taking photos.
Best time to visit
Approximately 30 minutes required. Stopping here while traveling after lunch allows for beautiful afternoon light for photos.
