An end-period tumulus whose brilliantly colored murals were discovered during excavation in 1972, causing a sensation throughout Japan. Most notably, the elegantly dressed female figures "Asuka beauties" (the group of women on the western wall) are familiar from textbooks. The original National Treasure murals have been removed from the stone chamber for conservation and restoration, but the Takamatsu Kofun Mural Gallery, located right next to the tumulus, offers detailed viewing of meticulous reproductions and a full-scale model of the stone chamber. The restored colors displayed are so beautiful that even adults become absorbed, and being able to connect textbook photos with the actual location is an experience unique to visiting in person. The two-tier circular tumulus is beautifully restored and maintained; families can stroll through the greenery of the National Asuka Historical Park while contemplating the grave of a high-ranking person from 1300 years ago.

Tips

About 15 minutes walk from Asuka Station, or about 5 minutes by bicycle. Use the parking lot and bicycle parking of the National Asuka Historical Park. The mural gallery requires admission, so bring cash. The gallery is compact and viewing fits within children's attention spans, and the tree-lined paths around the tumulus are well-maintained and navigable with a stroller. The mural gallery and tumulus can both be covered in under 1 hour.
