A grand Meiji-36 (1903) structure, the former Takaiichi-gun Educational Museum, now functions as the 'Imai Machiami Exchange Center' at the southeast entrance of Imai Town and is designated as an Nara Prefecture Cultural Property. Inside, the history of Imai, once called a prosperous merchant town where 'seven of every ten gold pieces of Yamato came from Imai' during the Edo period, is presented clearly through detailed scale models and videos of the streetscape. Previewing the highlights here before venturing into the lanes makes exploring a historic preservation district with over 500 traditional townhouses exponentially more enjoyable. Entry is free, which is delightful. The streetscape of tiled roofs and latticed doors is nostalgic for grandparents and fresh for grandchildren, offering discoveries for all three generations.
Tips
About a 5-minute walk from Kintetsu Yagi-Nishi-guchi Station. Entry is free, and town-walking maps are available here. While the lanes of Imai Town are flat and easy to navigate, they are residential living roads, so please explore quietly. Townhouse cafés and traditional sweets shops dot the area, allowing for rest breaks. It's wise to use the restroom here before exploring. If driving, use the parking lots around Imai Town.
Best time to visit
Approximately 1 hour. Preview the town in the afternoon light when it beautifully illuminates the latticed townscape, then head out on your stroll.
