Ascending the Mountain on Japan's Oldest Operating Cable Car: Gazing at Yoshino's Mountain Ridges Below

About this spot

Opened in 1929, this iconic Yoshino Mountain transport is recognized as Japan's oldest operating cable car and is registered as a mechanical heritage site. The short 3-minute aerial journey from Senbonkuchi Station at the base to Yoshino-san Station at the summit may be brief, but the windows of this retro gondola frame Yoshino's deep mountain ridges and valleys, instantly elevating the mood of your trip's beginning. It's particularly famous for becoming a premium viewing seat where the scenery below is dyed cherry blossom pink in spring. Since it cuts short a 20-minute walk up a steep slope, it's wonderful for preserving your energy for a full day of walking around Yoshino Mountain. The few minutes you and your companion spend swaying together in a small gondola become the first cherished memory of your Yoshino Mountain date.

Tips

Senbonkuchi Station is just outside Yoshino Station, the final stop on the Kintetsu Yoshino Line. Although it operates at short intervals, inspection periods may result in temporary closures with shuttle buses, so checking the operational status in advance is reassuring. During cherry blossom season, expect long waiting lines for boarding, so plan extra time. Cash payment is most reliable.

Best time to visit

Approximately 20 minutes total. Early morning departures around 9 a.m. have fewer crowds and offer clear, scenic views from the cable car windows.
