Paying Respects at the National Treasure Zaō-dō Hall of the UNESCO World Heritage Site: Experience the Grandeur of a 34-Meter-High Wooden Structure

This is the central pillar of Yoshino Mountain, serving as the head temple of the Shugendo (mountain ascetic practice) sect with over a thousand years of history. The iconic national treasure Zaō-dō hall, standing approximately 34 meters tall, is said to be the second-largest wooden structure in Japan after Tōdai-ji Temple's Great Buddha Hall, and the moment you gaze up at it from the approach path, you'll be rendered speechless by its magnificence. You can ascend into the hall for worship, and stepping into its dim interior, where naturally thick wooden pillars stand in rows, you'll be enveloped in the solemn atmosphere unique to this sacred site of mountain worship. The main deity, Kongō Zaō Daigongen, is normally a secret Buddha, and you can encounter the three towering blue statues, each about 7 meters tall, only during special unveiling periods. As a constituent asset of the UNESCO World Heritage site "Sacred Sites and Pilgrimage Routes in the Kii Mountain Range," this is a must-see spot where history enthusiasts should plan to spend generous time.
Tips
About 10 minutes' walk from Yoshino-san Ropeway Station, passing through the Kuro-mon (Black Gate) and the bronze torii gate. Since you must remove your shoes to ascend for worship at Zaō-dō, wearing slip-on shoes makes things easier. During special unveiling periods, admission fees change and lines form, so visiting early in the morning is recommended. You can obtain a commemorative seal (goshuin) at the temple office within the grounds.
Best time to visit
Approximately 1.5 hours. In the crisp morning air shortly after opening, the grandeur of Zaō-dō stands out most vividly.
