About this spot
The grand entrance standing at the western portal of Koyasan, this vermillion gate tower reaching approximately 25 meters in height is counted as a constituent asset of the UNESCO World Heritage Site "Sacred Sites and Pilgrimage Routes in the Kii Mountain Range." The current structure was rebuilt during the Edo period in Hoei 2 (1705), and imposing Nio Guardian statues are enshrined on either side, welcoming pilgrims as they protect the sacred site. Many pilgrims once walked up from the foothills and passed through this gate to enter the sacred grounds. Bowing as you gaze up at the gate tower marks the start of a journey that makes your spirit tighten. The clear air distinctive of the mountain at approximately 800 meters elevation and the beautiful mountain vistas from around the gate are pleasant and perfect for three-generation commemorative photos.
Tips
Take the cable car from Gokurakubashi Station on the Nankai Koyasan Line to Koyasan Station, then the Nankai Rinkan Bus to the "Daimon" stop. The "mountain area 1-day free bus pass" is convenient and economical for getting around the grounds. If driving, there is a free Daimon-Minami parking lot right beside the gate. The surrounding area has well-maintained pedestrian paths, making it easy to visit even for elderly visitors or those with strollers.
Best time to visit
Approximately 40 minutes required. Early morning has fewer visitors, allowing you to slowly gaze up at the vermillion gate bathed in morning sunlight.
