About this spot
The spiritual center where Kobo Daishi Kukai is said to have first constructed temple buildings when opening Koyasan, and one of Koyasan's two great sacred sites alongside Okunoin. The striking scarlet Konpon Daito pagoda draws the eye at approximately 48.5 meters tall. Inside, the mandala world is expressed three-dimensionally through Buddhist statues and pillar paintings centered on the Great Sun Buddha, creating an atmosphere that takes your breath away. Points of interest such as the Golden Hall, the Mido Hall, and the Pine of Sanko associated with Kobo Daishi are scattered throughout the grounds, and walking while treading on gravel paths is a true sacred pilgrimage. The octagonal sutra library, which when rotated is said to grant the merit of reading all sutras, can be rotated by children as well, making it enjoyable for all three generations. Explore the spacious grounds with gentle slopes at your own pace alongside elderly family members.
Tips
Exploration of the grounds is free; interior visits to the Konpon Daito and Golden Hall are each 500 yen. The path to Kongobuji via the charming forest trail called Janabi-ro is pleasant and takes about 10 minutes. Many areas have gravel surfaces, so a baby carrier may be easier to manage than a stroller. Stamps can be obtained at the stamp office near the Golden Hall.
Best time to visit
Approximately 1 hour 15 minutes required. Late morning has fewer group visitors, and the scarlet Konpon Daito stands out beautifully against the blue sky.
