This approximately 600-meter stone-paved slope marks the final stretch of the Nakakoji route of Kumano Kodo and is part of the world heritage site 'Spiritual Sites and Pilgrimage Routes in the Kii Mountain Range.' At the entrance, two cedar trees said to be about 800 years old stand like a gate to welcome you—a fitting beginning for a couple's journey. The 267 stone steps, surrounded by centuries-old cedar groves and thick with moss in deep green, are especially mystical in the early morning when dappled sunlight filters through. This section, where you can retrace the exact path walked by Kumano pilgrims of old, is popular, and along the way you'll find the remains of Otoki Oji, the last of the ninety-nine sacred shrines. Every stone step of this path is soaked in history, making it the perfect entrance to a classic walk for couples who want to experience Kumano at a leisurely pace.

Tips

About 20 minutes by local bus from JR Nachi Katsuura Station; get off at the 'Daimon Slope' bus stop. There's a free Daimon Slope parking lot (capacity approximately 100 vehicles) at the slope's entrance, and it's standard to park here and start walking. The moss-covered stone steps can be slippery after rain, so non-slip shoes are recommended. At the Daimon Slope Tea House at the entrance, Heian-period costume rentals are available and popular for souvenir photos.
