Pay your respects at the vermillion-painted sanctuary and enjoy an expansive view of Nachi's mountain range from the 330-meter elevation of the grounds

This revered shrine, along with Kumano Hongu Grand Shrine and Kumano Hayatama Grand Shrine, constitutes the three Grand Shrines of Kumano and is one of the main shrines among the thousands of Kumano shrines throughout Japan. At the top of 467 stone steps, the grounds at approximately 330 meters elevation are graced with brilliantly vermillion-painted sanctuary buildings, from which you can enjoy an expansive view of the Nachi mountain range stretching below. The main deity, Kumano Fusumi Okami, is also known as 'Musubu no Miya' (the shrine of union) and is the god of good relationships—perfect for couples worshipping together. Throughout the grounds you'll find Miketo Hiko Shrine, dedicated to the guiding deity Yatagarasu the three-legged crow, and an ancient camphor tree said to be about 850 years old. You can also experience 'tainai kubguri'—passing through the hollow trunk of the tree to make a wish. This is a main pilgrimage destination of Kumano, filled with the solemn atmosphere befitting a world heritage spiritual site.

Tips

If continuing from Daimon Slope, you'll ascend 467 stone steps at a leisurely pace. Small souvenir shops line the path, offering places to rest along the way. By car, you can use the Nachi Mountain Disaster Prevention Road (toll 800 yen) to reach near the sanctuary buildings. The Treasure Hall (open to the public for 300 yen for adults) displays treasures related to Kumano faith. Sacred seals (goshuin) are available at the shrine office.
