About this spot

A seafood market operated by the local Katada Fishery Cooperative, boasting the largest scale in Western Japan. The spacious interior is packed with fresh fish caught in nearby waters, dried fish, and Nanki's famous pickled plums, and just walking through the corridors conveys the vibrant energy of a working market. At the tuna counter, you may witness the spectacular sight of workers butchering large fish—children will be captivated. There are plenty of grilled seafood skewers and sushi available for eating as you walk, perfect for a light breakfast or snacking. Purchased seafood can be shipped by courier, so there's no worry about luggage becoming bulky even if you visit at the start of your trip. This is the perfect spot to begin your day experiencing Shirahama's ocean bounty.

Tips

About 5 minutes by car from JR Shirahama Station; there is a free large parking lot. The market is relatively uncrowded right after opening in the morning, but becomes busy with tour groups around midday. The interior is flat and easy to navigate with a stroller. Fresh fish and frozen products can be shipped home by courier, so you can proceed with your itinerary without worry.

Best time to visit

Allow approximately 1 hour. Shopping and browsing are most comfortable early in the morning when it's less crowded.
