About this spot

A gently sloping massive rock formation created by waves eroding soft sandstone over eons, descending toward the sea. The name comes from being spacious enough to lay down a thousand tatami mats, and you can actually walk on the rocks all the way close to the shoreline—which is the main attraction. The layered striations of the rock faces are natural sculptural forms, and it's fun to walk with children, wondering aloud "how did this form?" The spot is famous as a sunset viewing location, and the afternoon landscape of rock faces and sea sparkling in the western light is spectacular. Being just a short drive from Shiraurahama, it's convenient to visit as part of your beachside exploration.

Tips

About 5 minutes by car from Shiraurahama; there is a free parking lot right by the rocks. You can walk on the rocks, but many areas lack railings—always hold hands with children and avoid approaching the tip on high-wave days. The uneven surface makes carrying children safer than using a stroller, and non-slip sneakers are recommended.
