Hike through a vast 870-meter-high grassland plateau with 360-degree panoramic views from Kasamishi
About this spot
A prefectural natural park straddling Kimino Town and Arita Town at 870 meters elevation, featuring approximately 13 hectares of grassland across the summit. Known as one of the Kansai region's premier pampas grass destinations, autumn transforms it into a fantastical landscape with silvery plumes undulating across the vista. Spring through summer offer lush green grasslands and 360-degree panoramas; the iconic Kasamishi and the dramatic "Hi-ageri Rock" jutting from the cliff edge are perfect photography spots. The gentle walking trails are ideal for leisurely strolls and conversation, and on clear days, you can see all the way to Awaji Island and the mountain silhouettes of Shikoku. The refreshing highland breeze sweeping across the plateau washes away the fatigue of curvy mountain road driving.
Tips
You can drive up to the free parking lot at the base of the summit, but the winding roads are narrow with difficult passing, so drive carefully. The grassland has almost no shade, so hats and drinks are essential. At 870 meters, it's considerably cooler than the plains below with strong winds, so bring an extra layer. Exercise caution when photographing at Hi-ageri Rock.
Best time to visit
Approximately 2 hours. Early afternoon offers excellent views, and in autumn, the afternoon light beautifully illuminates the pampas grass with backlighting.
