About this spot

A waterfall about 8m high on Koza River's tributary, Koga River (小川), famous not just for the waterfall itself but for the spectacular sight of countless potholes (known as ouketsu) spreading across the riverbed. White water sliding down a rocky basin riddled with holes is nature's sculpture—the result of water and stone carving away rocks over vast spans of time. From the bridge you can see the entire waterfall and pothole formation at once, and in summer you might witness the traditional sweetfish fishing technique called Ton-Ton fishing, where anglers sit along the river and move their rods up and down in small motions. Enveloped by mountain silence and the sound of water, this place has a secret-realm quality all its own. Standing on the bridge with friends, gazing at this scenic waterfall, you'll lose track of time.

Tips

About 30 minutes by car along a prefectural road into the mountains from Roadside Station Ichimai Rock. A parking space and restroom are nearby. Admission is free and viewing is unrestricted. The rocky areas get wet and slippery from spray, so be very careful underfoot if you descend. Ton-Ton fishing is a summer-only sight during the sweetfish season.
