An ancient shrine traditionally said to have been founded during the reign of Emperor Ingyō, it was added to the World Heritage list in 2016 as part of "Sacred Sites and Pilgrimage Routes in the Kii Mountain Range." The shrine's name derives from a legend in which Kumano Bettō Tanjō staged a cockfight between red and white roosters before the Battle of Dan-no-ura to decide his support for the Minamoto clan; Tanjō is also said to be the father of Musashibo Benkei. Functioning as a subsidiary shrine to the three Kumano Shrines, it is said that in the past, those unable to visit Kumano would worship here as a substitute for the pilgrimage to the three shrines—truly the gateway to Kumano. The row of shrine buildings presents a serene and dignified appearance, and worshipping together in the crisp morning air will set an inspiring tone for your journey. The grounds feature a massive ancient camphor tree with sprawling branches, and the verdant forest sanctuary is also a sight to behold. Receiving a shrine stamp will become a cherished keepsake of your visit to this World Heritage site.
Tips
Excellent access, just a 5-minute walk from JR Kii-Tanabe Station, and the shrine has a dedicated parking lot for visitors. The grounds are open to worship freely, and early morning visits are quieter with fewer people. Shrine stamps can be obtained at the shrine office, so don't forget your stamp book. The Minakata Kumagusu Memorial Hall is within walking distance, allowing you to continue exploring the town on foot.
Best time to visit
Allow approximately 50 minutes. Worshipping in the crisp morning air is especially pleasant.
