A memorial facility dedicated to Minakata Kumagusu, the naturalist who gained worldwide recognition for his slime mold research and contributions to folklore studies, located in Tanabe where he spent his later years. The hall houses and displays an extensive collection of materials he left behind, including books, diaries, and specimens, allowing visitors to trace the extraordinary and fascinating life of this "intellectual giant" who matched wits with the world through self-education. Next to the hall, the historic residence and garden where Kumagusu lived for over 25 years until his death have been preserved. Viewing his study and library, where he immersed himself in research, conveys the intensity of his passion. Kumagusu's life, marked by his campaign to oppose shrine consolidation and protect sacred groves, resonates with this location so close to the World Heritage Toshin Shrine. Tips

About a 10-minute walk from JR Kii-Tanabe Station and very close on foot from Toshin Shrine. Admission to the Memorial Hall is free, while viewing the adjoining historic residence is fee-based. Note that the hall has closure days, such as Mondays, so confirm open hours before your visit. The exhibits include many text materials, so it's recommended to allow ample time for a leisurely reading.
