About this spot
A headland jutting out on the north side of Tanabe Bay, known as the pioneering location of the "National Trust" movement in Japan, where citizens raised funds to purchase and protect natural land. The main attraction is the flat rocky shore that appears at low tide. The tidal pools mirror the sky like glass, and when conditions align, the reflections create a spectacular landscape sometimes called "Japan's Uyuni Salt Flats." At dusk, the crimson sky and sea blend into one, with the silhouettes of the two of you standing on the rocks composing a natural picture—the course's finest photo spot. During the day, tidepooling is enjoyable, and the quiet inlet scenery is perfect for a leisurely walk. Learning the story of how citizen movements have protected this natural landscape will make the vista before you feel all the more precious.
Tips
About 10 minutes by car from JR Kii-Tanabe Station. Free parking is available at the cape's entrance, though spaces are limited. To capture the reflection effect, check tide tables in advance to find when low tide and sunset coincide—this is the most critical timing. Rocky areas are wet and slippery, so wear non-slip footwear that can get wet. The water mirror is most beautiful on calm, windless days.
Best time to visit
Allow approximately 1 hour. Late afternoon when low tide and sunset overlap is ideal for the spectacular view.
