This rare museum dedicated entirely to tiles focuses on Hachiman tiles (八幡瓦), the local industry that once made Omihachiman prosperous. The buildings with tiled roofs lining the canal-side grounds resemble artworks themselves, and the small paths and courtyards throughout the site are adorned abundantly with tiles, allowing you to feel the playful spirit of the craftsmen with every step. Inside, the museum displays the history and manufacturing methods of Hachiman tiles, along with expressive demon tiles (oni-kawara). The subtle luster known as "ibuki-gin" (燻し銀) is far more beautiful viewed up close than imagined, and after your visit, the tiled roofs throughout the town's streetscape will appear in a new light. The modest scale makes it easy to visit between sightseeing stops, and the view of the Hachiman Canal from the site is equally spectacular.

Tips

Located along the Hachiman Canal, just steps from the canal-side promenade. Admission is a modest 300 yen for adults. The compact interior can be leisurely explored in 30 minutes to an hour. Don't forget your camera—the tile-paved pathways and courtyards are perfect photo spots. Note that the museum closes on Mondays (or the following day if Monday is a holiday).
