Tour a wealthy Omi merchant's estate. Experience the lifestyle and commercial wisdom of the past

About this spot

This stately residence of Omi merchant Nishikawa Toshire, whose business name "Daimonji-ya" (大文字屋) was renowned for trading in mosquito netting and tatami matting, is designated as an Important Cultural Property. Built in the mid-Edo period, the exterior is modest—characteristic of Omi merchants' philosophy of frugal simplicity—yet the interior reveals thoughtfully selected materials and refined design. By touring the account office, guest rooms, and storehouses, you can intimately experience the commerce and lifestyle of the era. Encountering the merchant philosophy exemplified by "san-po-yoshi" (三方よし—benefiting the buyer, seller, and society alike), you'll understand why this streetscape has been so beautifully preserved. The Shinmachi-dori (新町通り) area facing the residence is an Important Traditional Building Preservation District with many merchant houses still standing; after your visit, every corner of your street walk will be photogenic.

Tips

Located along Shinmachi-dori, about a 5-minute walk from Hachiman Canal. Remove your shoes before entering the tatami rooms; easy-off shoes are recommended. The building has level changes and steep stairs, so watch your footing carefully. Closed Mondays (or the following day if Monday is a holiday). Combine your visit with a leisurely walk along Shinmachi-dori, where the merchant townhouses continue.

Best time to visit

Allow approximately 1 hour. Late afternoon is relatively quiet and conducive to peaceful viewing
