Built in 1877 as the Hachihachihi East School, this pseudo-Western architectural gem stands directly across from the great torii gate of Himure Hachimangu Shrine and is one of Omihachiman's iconic symbols. Omi merchants pooled their resources to fund its construction for children's education—a testament to the town's cultural spirit. The building's fusion of traditional Japanese craftsmanship and Western design reflects the determination of the craftsmen and the aspirations of the merchant community of that era. Today converted into a tourist information center, it offers tourist information, souvenir shopping on the first floor, and occasional gallery exhibitions on the second. Admission is free, making it an ideal final stop on your tour. The view of the great torii gate and the street beyond from the windows is the perfect way to savor the lingering impressions of your day in Omihachiman.
Tips
Directly opposite the great torii gate of Himure Hachimangu Shrine, just a short walk from Hachiman Canal. Free admission; the information desk provides pamphlets and local information. Souvenir goods are available, convenient for last-minute purchases. Closing time is around 5 PM, so allow time if visiting at the end of your tour.
