An ancient temple on Takashima Island floating in Lake Biwa, traditionally founded by imperial decree of Emperor Shomu during the Nara period. The main deity, Benzaiten, is counted among Japan's Three Great Benzaiten—alongside those at Enoshima and Itsukushima—and has been the object of profound devotion since ancient times. The 165 stone steps leading from the boat landing to the main hall are called the 'Steps of Prayer,' and legend says that with each step you climb, you draw closer to your wishes. After paying respects to the Great Benzaiten at the main hall, head to the Kannon Hall, the 30th temple on the Saigoku Pilgrimage of 33 Temples. The National Treasure Karamon Gate, said to have been moved from the ruins of Osaka Castle during the Toyotomi period, is a must-see with its remarkable polychrome sculptural carvings. The corridor of Important Cultural Properties leading from the Kannon Hall to the shrine is full of charm, and the entire island becomes a space of prayer.

Tips

Admission to Takashima Island requires an island entry fee (¥600 for adults), separate from the boat ticket, paid at the island entrance. The 165 steps are steep but have handrails, so you can climb at your own pace. Time on the island is limited to approximately 70–85 minutes due to ferry schedules, so upon landing, go directly up the steps and proceed from the main hall in order for efficiency.
