About this spot
A spacious lakeside park developed on the site of Nagahama Castle, Toyotomi Hideyoshi's first castle. The park features a reconstructed castle tower built in 1983 that now houses the Nagahama Castle Historical Museum, showcasing Hideyoshi and the history of the Kōhoku region. From the top-floor observation deck, you can take in a complete panorama of Lake Biwa, Takashima Island, and Mount Ibuki—viewing the island you crossed by boat this morning now from the lake side brings a special sense of emotion. The lakeshore features pleasant walking paths lined with lawn and pine groves, perfect for a leisurely stroll. Sitting on a bench gazing out over the lake is a luxurious experience in itself. The park is designated as one of Japan's Top 100 Cherry Blossom Spots, and in spring the interplay between the blossoms filling the grounds and the castle tower is magnificent.
Tips
Just a 7-minute walk from JR Nagahama Station, and very close from Nagahama Port. The park itself is free; admission to the castle tower observation deck requires entry to the Nagahama Castle Historical Museum (¥410 for adults). Free parking is available but becomes congested during cherry blossom season. The lakeside has little shade, so bring a hat in summer. There are many benches—perfect for a rest while gazing at Lake Biwa.
Best time to visit
Approximately 1 hour. The afternoon sun beautifully illuminates Lake Biwa, and dusk is particularly renowned for sunset views over the water
