Leisurely family stroll along a quiet pond with a drum bridge
About this spot
Just minutes by car from Shirahige Shrine, Otomegatike is an inner lake connected to Lake Biwa, preserving remnants of an inlet called "Katori Sea" from the Man'yōshū period. During the Sengoku era, it served as an outer moat for Ōmiizujo Castle, built by Nobuaki, the nephew of Oda Nobunaga. Today it is developed as a walking spot with a wooden drum bridge spanning the water surface and a surrounding walking path. From the bridge you can leisurely view the green mountains reflected in the water and passing waterfowl; the scale is perfect for walking with children. Free from the bustle of tourist attractions, it is a hidden gem beloved by locals—an ideal place to pause and calm your heart during a scenic drive.
Tips
About 10 minutes on foot from JR Ōmi-Takashima Station, and parking spaces near the pond make it easily accessible by car. The walking paths are flat and easy to navigate with a stroller; however, some waterside areas lack fencing, so keep a close eye on small children. Combining a visit with the nearby Ōmiizujo Castle ruins allows for a brief history walk.
Best time to visit
Approximately 45 minutes required. Morning hours when the air is clear offer calm water and ideal walking conditions.
