About this spot

The spring water gushing at the source of the Jizo River, the symbol of Samegai-shuku on the Nakasendo Trail, where clear water flows constantly from beneath the stone wall of Kamo Shrine. According to legend, Yamato Takeru, the legendary Japanese prince, collapsed from the poisonous miasma of the deity on Ibuki Mountain and cooled his fever with this spring water—a tale that is said to be the origin of the place name "Samegai" (awakening well). Selected as one of Japan's Heisei 100 Spring Waters, the water maintains a cool and crystal-clear 14 degrees Celsius year-round. In summer, delicate white flowers of water buttercups sway gently on the river's surface. Along the clear stream stand old houses, and with children delighting in the cold water and grandparents nostalgically recalling the past, a three-generation stroll along the old road provides a pleasant and fitting close to your day. The stream is also home to clearliving creatures such as itchy fish (killifish).

Tips

Approximately 10 minutes on foot from JR Samegai Station along the Jizo River; the spring outlet is below Kamo Shrine. Water buttercups are at their best from late July through August, though heavy rains can cause the water level to rise and the flowers to submerge. The path along the river is narrow, so keep small children close by hand. Shops along the way sell the local specialty mizu manju (water-cooled sweet dumplings), perfect for a refreshment break during your stroll.

Best time to visit

Approximately 40 minutes. Late afternoon just before sunset, when the setting sun reflects off the water's surface and illuminates the water buttercups, is particularly lovely
