A museum preserving the history of Samegai-shuku, the 61st post town on the Nakasendo Trail. The building is a Western-style structure, a converted former Samegai Post Office building constructed during the Taisho period, and is registered as a Tangible Cultural Property of Japan as a valuable example of modern architecture said to involve designer Liang. The museum displays materials relating to the daily life of the post town and the history of Samegai, allowing visitors to reflect on scenes of the old road where merchants and daimyo processions once traveled during the Edo period. Nearby, remains of the honjin (horse and porter station) also survive in the form of the former Samegai-shuku Tonya (merchant agent) office, a rare example still existing along the Nakasendo Trail. Combining a visit here with a stroll along the Jizo River will bring the history of this clear-stream post town much closer to you.
Tips
Located about a 5-minute walk from JR Samegai Station, facing the old Nakasendo Trail along the Jizo River. If driving, use parking facilities near the station. The museum interior is compact; with the merchant office, it takes only 30-45 minutes to view completely. On weekends during water buttercup season, parking lots in the area can be congested, so arriving early in the afternoon is safer.
