A symbolic landmark standing at the heart of Kurogane Square, this glass hall showcases a black-plastered Western building originally built as a bank during the Meiji era, once called "Kurogane Bank." Admission is free, and the interior displays glass products gathered from around the world. Glittering accessories, sake vessels, and single-flower vases that convey the warmth of handcrafted work will make your heart leap with joy just from gazing at them. Glass workshops and experience classes dot the surrounding area, allowing you to try your hand at glassblowing and stained glass-making—unique to this district. The black-plaster exterior is also a popular photo spot representing the retro streetscape, and a photo with the Western building as your backdrop becomes a highlight of your trip. The time spent searching for that special piece becomes a cherished memory—a spot that women travelers will love.
Tips
About 5 minutes on foot from JR Nagahama Station. Sunday and holiday afternoons can get crowded, so aim for the morning when the shops open. If you plan to enjoy glassblowing or stained glass experiences, early reservation is recommended. Have glass purchases wrapped in padding and carry them in a bag with roomy gussets. If traveling by car, use the nearby municipal parking lots for convenience.
Best time to visit
Allow approximately 1 hour. Early morning after opening is less crowded and allows you to leisurely examine items.
