Opened in 1998 to commemorate the 40th anniversary of Sagawa Express, this museum is Shiga's premier institution, with the building itself—appearing to float above an expansive water garden—recognized as an artwork. The collection centers on works by painter Ikuo Hirayama, sculptor Tadayoshi Sato, and potter Kisaku Raku XI, which can be appreciated leisurely in tranquil exhibition spaces. The way light reflected from the water surface dances across the corridors and outer walls changes with the time of day, so simply walking through the museum feels spiritually cleansing. Tips
From JR Biwa Lake Line Moriyama Station, take a local bus for about 30 minutes; from JR Kosei Line Katata Station, about 15 minutes by bus. Free parking is available if driving. Viewing of the Kisaku Raku XI Tea Room requires advance reservation—if interested, confirm early on the official website. The interior is flat with few steps, making it easy to tour at a relaxed pace.

Allow approximately 1.5 hours. Early morning, shortly after opening, has fewer visitors, allowing quiet appreciation with the soft light of morning shimmering off the water garden.
