Stroll along the lakeside lawn and savor the spectacular views of the Hira mountain range and Lake Biwa across the water

About this spot

A grassy park spread along the lakeshore road on the east side of Lake Biwa Bridge (琵琶湖大橋), offering an open and expansive view spot with Lake Biwa directly before you and the Hira mountain range (比良山系) across the water. From winter through early spring, the park becomes a carpet of cold-season rapeseed blossoms, creating a stunning contrast with the snow-capped Hira mountains—a scenic vista renowned as one of Shiga's most iconic views. In summer, the field transforms into a sunflower meadow, presenting a different character each season. The simplicity of this lakeside park—free of play equipment—allows you to leisurely stroll while feeling the lake breeze, or sit on a bench together gazing at the water's surface, with time flowing quietly between you. After immersing yourselves in art at the museum, this is the perfect spot to let your heart unwind with Lake Biwa's beauty.

Tips

Immediately along the lakeshore road (Sazanami Kaido) near the east end of Lake Biwa Bridge. Free parking is available, though during peak rapeseed or sunflower seasons, the lot often fills from late morning, so arriving early is advisable during these periods. There is no concession stand, so bring your own refreshments. The lakeshore has no windbreaks, and breezy days are common, so bringing a light jacket ensures comfort.

Best time to visit

Allow approximately 45 minutes. Late morning in bright daylight offers the most beautiful views of the lake and Hira mountain range, perfect for a pleasant stroll.
