Ascend to the summit of Mount Uchimi at 1,100 meters altitude via ropeway from the base

About this spot

A mountain resort spanning Mount Uchimi and Mount Horai at 1,100 meters altitude, where the ropeway connecting the base and summit is one of Japan's fastest-class systems. A large 121-passenger gondola ascends in about 5 minutes, and as you gain altitude, a grand panorama of Lake Biwa unfolds beneath you—those few minutes feel like an attraction in themselves. Looking back, the lake surface stretches endlessly, and exclamations fill the gondola cabin at the spectacular views. The summit features terraces, cafés, and various activities, and in winter it bustles as one of the Kansai region's premier ski resorts—a signature scenic resort of the Kosei region. When riding with friends, securing window seats on the Lake Biwa side is a must. On the way up, the lake view is best from the rear of the gondola direction.

Tips

By car, it's about 5 minutes from the Shiga IC on the Kosei Expressway; by train, it's about 10 minutes by local bus from JR Kosei Line Shiga Station. Ropeway fares vary by season and day of the week, so advance confirmation and purchase on the official website is recommended. Weekend queues for the ropeway form from morning during holiday seasons, so arriving by 9 AM is the right choice. The summit is more than 5 degrees cooler than the base, so don't forget a jacket.

Best time to visit

Allow about 45 minutes. Recommended to ride the ropeway during the less crowded early morning, around 9 AM.
