About this spot

The scenic terrace spreading across the summit of Mount Uchimi at approximately 1,100 meters altitude, where the wood deck overlooking Lake Biwa and the water mirror blend into the sky, offering an openness that is among Kansai's finest. Settling into the sofa seating of the Grand Terrace, Lake Biwa stretches endlessly before you, giving the sensation of floating in the sky. With a beverage or sweet from the adjoining café in hand, gazing at the scenery with friends is pure bliss. A lift to the Horai side offers another terrace with views of both lake and mountains, and wandering around searching for photogenic spots is one of the pleasures. This combination of spectacular scenery and café is sure to become the highlight of a group trip.

Tips

The terrace itself can be used with only the ropeway fare, though some premium sofa seating is fee-based and limited in quantity—securing it immediately upon summit arrival is essential if you aim for it. The café gets crowded around midday, so ordering early is advisable. The summit has little shade from sunlight; on clear days, hats and sunglasses are recommended for comfort. Views are greatly affected by weather, so check the official website's live summit camera the morning of your visit.

Best time to visit

Allow about 2 hours. Late morning when the air is clear and the lake is distinctly visible is best.
