Take a Scenic 4-Minute Aerial Walk to Hachiman Mountain Summit and Overlook Lake Biwa and the Castle Town
About this spot
A ropeway that connects Himure Hachimangu Shrine to the summit of Hachiman Mountain in approximately 4 minutes. As the gondola ascends, the orderly grid-pattern former castle town of Omihachiman, the water village, and Lake Biwa come into view, offering a delightful aerial stroll experience in just a short time. The summit area was the site of Hachiman Mountain Castle (八幡山城), the former seat of Toyotomi Hidetsugu (豊臣秀次), and winding trails between the stone walls lead to numerous scenic viewpoints, including Murakumo-gosho Zuiryuji Temple (村雲御所瑞龍寺). The location has been selected as a "Place for Lovers" (恋人の聖地) with many photogenic monuments. It's a refreshing scenic break to enjoy between sweets stops.
Tips
The station is right next to Himure Hachimangu Shrine, just a few minutes' walk from Club Harie Himure Village. Gondolas run at approximately 15-minute intervals; roundtrip tickets are standard. The trails at the summit are mostly unpaved mountain paths, so wear comfortable walking shoes. Plan about 30-40 minutes to walk around the viewpoints.
Best time to visit
Plan for approximately 1 hour 15 minutes. The views are best before midday when the air is clear, allowing you to see across Lake Biwa to the far shore.
